LPM Member Michael Amushelelo Released from Custody Following University Protest

Amushelelo

Windhoek, Namibia – September 17, 2024

Michael Amushelelo, a prominent member of the Landless People's Movement (LPM), has been released from police custody after his arrest on Monday following a protest at the University of Namibia (Unam) in Windhoek. The activist was detained for allegedly attempting to block the university’s entrance and causing damage to a student’s vehicle in the process.

According to Khomas regional police commander, commissioner Wilhelm Steenkamp, the incident occurred when Amushelelo, along with a group of protesters, sought to obstruct access to the Unam campus. The blockade was part of a demonstration, though specific demands or grievances leading to the protest have not yet been publicly disclosed.

The confrontation escalated when a student, attempting to leave the campus, was allegedly blocked by Amushelelo. In the ensuing commotion, the student's car was reportedly damaged, prompting the student to file a case against Amushelelo for malicious damage to property.

Amushelelo, known for his activism and outspoken stance on social issues, was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. However, he has since been released, pending further investigations. While no official charges have been confirmed, the case remains under police scrutiny.

The LPM has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the protest or Amushelelo's arrest. This event follows a series of protests led by various political and social groups in Namibia, reflecting growing tensions over educational, economic, and social issues.

Further details surrounding the protest and Amushelelo’s legal standing are expected to emerge in the coming days.
