Several workers at the Merlus Cormorant factory in Walvis Bay have fallen ill after reportedly inhaling ammonia gas, leading to a chaotic scene outside the building. Employees began fainting and vomiting earlier today, prompting them to evacuate the facility.
Workers have refused to resume their duties, citing health and safety concerns, and are currently gathered outside the factory, assisting colleagues affected by the gas exposure.
However, the management at the Merlus Cormorant factory has clarified that the recent ammonia incident, which caused several workers to fall ill, did not originate from their facility.
Speaking on behalf of the factory, Merlus Management Chairman Mr. Stanley Nick Katzao stated that the source of the leak was traced to a Russian-operated crab vessel docked nearby.
“This incident has nothing to do with Merlus,” Katzao emphasized. “A crab vessel operated by the Russians experienced a significant ammonia leak. Unfortunately, the wind carried the fumes in the direction of our factory, entering the building through the windows.”
Several workers at the factory reported symptoms related to ammonia exposure, leading to the evacuation of the premises. Emergency services, including the police, responded promptly to the incident.
The situation is currently under investigation to determine the extent of the leak and its potential impact. Authorities are also reviewing safety measures for handling hazardous materials in the area.
No further updates on the condition of the affected workers were available at the time of this report.
