The City of Windhoek has reported that 1,189 residents across 282 households have been affected by recent flooding, with eight homes completely washed away. Among the severely impacted areas are Matshitshi, Mersin, and Ganzi streets.
City officials, including Acting Chief Executive Officer O’Brien Hekandjo, Councillor Austin Kwenani, and Councilor Sam Nujoma, have been actively involved in assessing the damage. They visited potential relocation sites in Havana and Otjomuise to assist affected families. Councillor Ivan Skrywer also visited the communities on Sunday to assess the extent of the devastation.
In a statement, the City indicated that swift action is being taken to temporarily relocate affected families to safer grounds. Goreangab has been identified as a potential relocation site, and preparations to clear and set up the area are already underway. Temporary shelters and food parcels will be distributed with support from the Office of the Prime Minister.

Efforts to clear riverbeds are ongoing to mitigate the risk of future flooding. The City noted that some of the affected families had previously been relocated from flood-prone areas, while others recently settled in these high-risk zones.
The City of Windhoek has urged residents to remain patient and cooperate with relief measures. Officials emphasized that the interventions are aimed at assisting those in genuine need.
Residents have also been reminded not to block stormwater channels, as such actions significantly increase flooding risks. Several incidents in formal areas were reported where blocked channels caused water to stagnate and flood properties.
Efforts are continuing to provide immediate support to the affected households while working on long-term solutions to prevent recurring disasters.
