Opuwo, January 10, 2025 — A two-day-old baby girl was miraculously rescued on Wednesday evening in Opuwo after being abandoned by her mother shortly after birth.
The infant was discovered near the Roads Authority Offices around 20:30 after a passerby heard her desperate cries in the dark. She was found still covered in afterbirth and wrapped in a dark green blanket.
Chief Inspector Vehangaiza Hindjou, Nampol's Head of Community Liaison in the Kunene Region, confirmed to nbc News that authorities were alerted and swiftly responded to the scene. The baby was immediately taken to Opuwo State Hospital, where nursing staff named her Michelle. Medical assessments indicate that she is in good health.
Further police investigations led officers to the 18-year-old mother, who was found at her home lying in a pool of blood. The young mother, who also has a 2-year-old daughter, is currently undergoing evaluation by social care workers. Authorities have not yet filed formal charges as the assessment is ongoing.
