A dispute over cattle grazing rights on Farm Swartkoppies, near Dordabis, escalated into a fatal confrontation on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of 53-year-old Nicolaas Orlam.

The incident, which occurred between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM, saw Orlam sustain a fatal stab wound to the chest from a pocket knife during an argument with a 28-year-old man.

The tragic events unfolded when Orlam and his wife arrived at Farm Swartkoppies to inspect their livestock. It was during this visit that a heated exchange began between Orlam and the suspect. The core of the disagreement reportedly centered on calves that had been released from their kraal for grazing, a common point of contention in areas where grazing land is a valuable resource. The argument intensified, and according to police reports, Orlam allegedly slapped the younger man. In response, the suspect reportedly brandished a pocket knife and stabbed Orlam in the chest.

Despite his critical injury, Orlam attempted to distance himself from the scene, walking a short distance before collapsing and succumbing to his wound. Emergency services were not able to save him. Law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the distress call, apprehending the suspect at the scene of the crime.

The deceased’s family has been notified of the tragic loss. Police have confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Orlam’s death is actively underway, as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events that led to this unfortunate outcome.
