A 44-year-old man from Spitzkoppe is fighting for his life in Katutura Intermediate Hospital following allegations of police brutality involving officers reportedly stationed at Usakos.
Melvin ||Areseb, who has undergone multiple surgeries following the incident, claims the attack left him with severe internal injuries, including damage to one of his testicles. He is currently dependent on a catheter as part of his recovery.
Recalling the events from his hospital bed, ||Areseb told Local News Outlet that the ordeal began after an argument with his girlfriend, which had already ended by the time police arrived several hours later. According to him, officers woke him while he was asleep, handcuffed him, and physically assaulted him before detaining him overnight at the Usakos Police Station.
His mother later took him to Usakos State Hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Windhoek State Hospital for urgent treatment.
The victim, a father of five children including a toddler and the primary provider for his family, remains in critical condition.
Erongo police spokesperson, Senior Inspector Judith Shomongula, confirmed awareness of the matter, saying the allegations are under investigation. She assured the public that further details will be communicated once the investigation progresses.
The incident has sparked concern within the community, with many awaiting clarity on what transpired and calling for accountability.
