81-Year-Old War Veteran Takes Own Life in Mutjokotjo Village

Police Report

An 81-year-old war veteran, Michael Ekanga, tragically ended his life on Monday morning by hanging himself with a generator cord at his home in Mutjokotjo Village.

According to his nephew, Muhangakenu Dionisio Joao, the family made the heartbreaking discovery early in the morning.

“The body was found by his wife. She had gone to the children’s room to wake them up for school. The children told her they saw something unusual. When she checked, she found him hanging,” said Joao.

No suicide note was found, and police have not yet reported any signs of foul play.

This marks the second reported suicide by a war veteran in the Kavango regions within a week. Just days earlier, another veteran, identified as Kampanza, also took his own life at his home in Safari.

Authorities have urged families to pay attention to the mental health and emotional well-being of elderly citizens, especially those with a history of trauma or isolation. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
