A shocking tragedy unfolded at Oshamba village in the Oniipa constituency over the weekend, when an 89-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her granddaughter.
Oshikoto regional crime investigation coordinator, deputy commissioner Titus Ekandjo, confirmed that a 39-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday in connection with the incident. The victim has been identified as Julia Michael, who reportedly lived alone.
According to Ekandjo, the suspect, believed to be mentally unstable, had travelled from Ondangwa to visit her grandmother on Saturday. The following day, a neighbour who often assisted the elderly woman visited the homestead and found the suspect cooking. Suspicion arose when the neighbour could not locate Michael, prompting him to search the house.
Tragically, he discovered Michael’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood in her bedroom, bearing multiple deep wounds. Two pangas and a knife, believed to have been used in the attack, were recovered at the scene.
The suspect was taken into police custody and is expected to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Police investigations continue to determine the motive behind the brutal killing.
