The Namibian government has called on the public to maintain a respectful and solemn atmosphere during the national mourning period for the late founding president, Sam Nujoma.
Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Modestus Amutse, cautioned against holding large public celebrations during this time, stating that such activities could be perceived as a sign of disrespect.
Amutse stressed the importance of honoring the former leader with dignity, as the mourning period officially commenced on 9 February 2025. While discouraging public festivities, he clarified that indoor gatherings may still proceed, particularly in cases where they are necessary for essential services.
