France and Norway Reach World Cup Round of 32 After Victories in Group I

France and Norway became the first teams from Group I to secure their places in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 following victories over Iraq and Senegal respectively on Monday.
In Philadelphia, France overcame a lengthy weather delay to defeat Iraq 3-0 and book their knockout berth with a game to spare. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 14th minute before adding his second goal after play resumed following a suspension caused by thunderstorms. Ousmane Dembélé completed the victory with France’s third goal as Didier Deschamps’ side maintained their perfect start to the tournament.
Meanwhile, Norway also sealed qualification after edging Senegal 3-2 in a thrilling encounter. Erling Haaland gave the Scandinavians the lead in the 28th minute before Alexander Sørloth doubled their advantage shortly after halftime. Senegal fought back through Ismaïla Sarr, but Martin Ødegaard restored Norway’s two-goal cushion in the 78th minute. Habib Diallo scored late on for Senegal, setting up a nervy finish, but Norway held firm to secure all three points.

The results leave both France and Norway on six points after two matches, guaranteeing their progression to the Round of 32. The two sides will now meet in their final group fixture to determine who finishes top of Group I, while Senegal and Iraq will battle for third place and a potential qualification spot as one of the best third-placed teams.
