Rundu Town Council’s Run-Down Offices Draw Minister Sankwasa’s Criticism

James Sankwasa in Rundu

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, has voiced his concern and confusion regarding the poor condition of the Rundu Town Council offices, which have reportedly remained neglected for over 35 years.

During a recent inspection, Minister Sankwasa questioned why the infrastructure of the council offices does not meet the standards expected of a proclaimed town. “I have traveled extensively across the country and observed newly proclaimed villages and town councils with modern, well-maintained infrastructure. It is perplexing why Rundu, a key urban centre, has been left in such a dilapidated state for the past 35 years,” he remarked.

The Minister further emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue, noting that the current state of the offices sends a negative message to both residents and visitors. “The cupboard that was left by Boer here has even been replaced with bricks. This not only reflects poor maintenance but also undermines the dignity and functionality of the council offices,” Sankwasa added.

Minister Sankwasa called for collaborative efforts to rectify the situation, stating, “I believe this is a challenge that requires collective action. The status quo is unacceptable, and we must work together to ensure that Rundu’s infrastructure reflects its importance as a town.”

  • Good initiative by Hon; Sankwasa, I live in Rundu and I can acknowledge that Rundu Town Council has failed us since it’s Establishment. If we look around the Rundu Town there’s poor road in both urban and rural settlement, unserviceable old and new location like Tuhingireni and Tumweneni. So, “we propose that the Rundu Town Council must be replaced by Municipality ” i believe perhaps in that way they will be a speed-up on development “.
