The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has revealed plans to lease more than 5,000 private vehicles to support logistics during the Regional Councils and Local Authorities elections slated for 26 November.
According to the commission, the Ohangwena Region tops the list with a requirement of 716 vehicles, while Omusati and Oshikoto follow closely with 689 and 520 respectively. The remaining regions will need the following numbers: Hardap (174), Khomas (276), Omaheke (277), Otjozondjupa (326), Kavango West (327), Kavango East (329), Erongo (230), Oshana (330), //Karas (239), Kunene (351), and Zambezi (389).
The ECN’s vehicle procurement is based on set standards. Vehicles offered for hire must be less than 10 years old, either single or double cab 2×4 or 4×4 models fitted with a canopy, and must be roadworthy. Additionally, they should not display any stickers, logos, or colours associated with political, religious, or commercial organisations.
Vehicle inspection and roadworthiness verification will be conducted in all regions between 27 and 31 October.
The ECN emphasized that hiring privately owned vehicles and other logistics support contributes to local economic activity during election periods, offering income opportunities to many vehicle owners across the country.
