Chelsea Face Tough Challenge as Liverpool Visit Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are bracing for one of their biggest tests of the season as they welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge this weekend. Both clubs have been struggling for consistency, and this encounter could prove decisive in shaping their campaigns.

Liverpool head into the clash eager to bounce back after a disappointing run of results that saw them lose to Crystal Palace in the league and to Galatasaray in Europe. The Reds started the season strongly, but recent performances have raised questions about their rhythm and composure.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are also under pressure after suffering two consecutive league defeats. Their only relief came in a narrow Champions League victory earlier this week, but domestic struggles have left them in mid-table a far cry from the ambitions set at the start of the season.

For manager Enzo Maresca, this match is more than just about points; it’s about restoring belief within a side that has battled injuries and inconsistency.

The Blues are heavily hit by injuries. Defenders Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo remain unavailable. In midfield, Dario Essugo and Andrey Santos are sidelined, while forwards Cole Palmer and Liam Delap are also out. To make matters worse, Trevoh Chalobah is suspended following his red card in the previous match.

Maresca defended his players, pointing out that Chelsea’s congested schedule including their Club World Cup participation has contributed to fatigue and injuries. He also acknowledged that disciplinary lapses have hurt the team but expressed confidence in the squad’s depth to respond positively.
Liverpool’s injury list is also concerning. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker picked up an injury during the midweek fixture and is unlikely to feature, with Giorgi Mamardashvili expected to start in goal. Striker Hugo Ekitike and winger Federico Chiesa are being monitored for fitness, though Ekitike has a better chance of being included in the squad. Defender Giovanni Leoni remains a long-term absentee.

Despite the setbacks, manager Jürgen Klopp remains confident in his squad’s ability to respond, citing the team’s strong mentality and attacking balance.

Head-to-Head Stats

This fixture marks the 199th meeting between Chelsea and Liverpool across all competitions.

  • Liverpool have won 83 matches, Chelsea 66, while 49 ended in draws.
  • Liverpool have not won at Stamford Bridge in their last four visits, recording three draws and one defeat.
  • Chelsea’s last victory over Liverpool came in May with a 3–1 home win, and they will aim to repeat that result.

Match Details

  • Date: Saturday, 4 October 2025
  • Kick-off: 17:30 (UK Time)
  • Venue: Stamford Bridge, London

Chelsea are expected to approach the game cautiously, likely focusing on defensive organization and quick counterattacks. With several key players missing, Maresca may rely on academy graduates and versatile options to fill the gaps.
