Child Labour Accusation: Court Grants Partial Bail to Suspects in Underage Domestic Work Case

Two individuals accused of child exploitation have been granted bail by the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court following allegations that they trafficked and employed an 11-year-old Zambian girl as a domestic worker.

During a court appearance, State Prosecutor Sylvious Malange urged the court to impose a bail amount of N$10 000 each, citing the seriousness of the charges. He particularly emphasized that one of the accused, identified as Kutepa, is considered a potential flight risk due to his foreign nationality.

However, Magistrate Beatrice Sibalatani ruled that only the Namibian national among the two accused be granted bail of N$5 000, with the condition that the duo be released from custody upon payment. Kutepa remains in custody pending further proceedings. The case was postponed to 1 October to allow the police to continue with their investigations.

According to the police’s preliminary findings, the suspects allegedly worked together to recruit and transport the minor girl from Zambia earlier this year. The victim was reportedly employed at the home of co-accused Sitobohile in the Chotto Compound, where she was promised a monthly wage of N$500. Investigators, however, found that the child never received any payments.

The case came to light after concerned members of the community reported suspected child abuse to the police. Authorities intervened and removed the minor from the household. She is currently receiving care at a designated safe house.

Both accused have chosen to represent themselves in court.

The police continue to investigate the matter, which could potentially lead to human trafficking and child labour charges under Namibian law.
