A wave of grief and anger has swept through the community of Sivara village in the Kapako Constituency, Kavango West, following the horrific murder of 25-year-old Veronica Kudumo.
On 26 May 2025, Kudumo was ambushed and brutally killed by three men while walking through a Mahangu field with her 10-month-old baby strapped to her back. The savage attack left the infant critically injured and fighting for his life in hospital.
The infant, Clemens Sitoti, remains in critical condition at the Rundu State Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. He sustained a severe head injury during the attack and is now battling lung infections while being fed through nasal tubes.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the village and surrounding areas, prompting a large public outcry. On Thursday, over 100 residents gathered in a peaceful demonstration organised by the SWAPO District Office to demand justice and an end to gender-based violence (GBV). Supporters, including Kudumo’s family and local leaders, marched through the village in solidarity.
The community’s pain and frustration were echoed by Kavango West Governor, Verna Sinimbo, who visited the bereaved family on Wednesday. Offering her condolences and food supplies, Governor Sinimbo also expressed concern for the baby’s health and urged swift action from authorities.
During the demonstration, a petition was handed to Kapako Constituency Councillor Johannes Karondo. In the document, SWAPO District Coordinator Munkara Valentin Ndango condemned the rise in GBV and called for collective national responsibility in protecting women and children.
“Law enforcement cannot fight this battle alone,” Ndango said. “We all have a duty to uphold our Constitution and create a peaceful and inclusive society.”
The three suspects linked to Kudumo’s murder have since appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court. They were remanded in custody until 18 September 2025, pending further investigation.
Veronica Kudumo was laid to rest this morning in Sivara, with mourners describing her as a devoted mother and gentle soul whose life was taken far too soon. The community continues to call for justice and lasting solutions to the scourge of violence against women and children.
