The City of Windhoek has announced that it successfully cleared the sewage blockage that affected parts of Katutura Central over the weekend.
City spokesperson Lydia Amutenya confirmed that municipal teams were promptly dispatched to the area to restore normal flow and clean up the affected sites. She said the operation was completed successfully, but noted that vandalism of sewage infrastructure continues to pose major challenges.
“We have observed serious vandalism to sewage lines and manholes, which contributes to frequent blockages,” Amutenya stated, calling on residents to help safeguard public infrastructure.
Despite the cleanup efforts, residents of Katutura Central remain frustrated by what they describe as persistent sanitation problems and foul odours in their community. Many have urged the municipality to implement long-term measures rather than temporary fixes.
The situation escalated on Monday when a group of residents, led by social activist Shaun Gariseb, staged a protest at the City of Windhoek offices by dumping sewage-contaminated waste at the entrance. The act was intended to draw attention to their ongoing struggle with recurring leaks and poor waste management.
City officials say they are working to strengthen infrastructure protection measures and to engage with the affected communities to find sustainable solutions.
