City of Windhoek Warns Residents of Scammers Posing as Municipal Officials

Lydia Amutenya

Windhoek
– The City of Windhoek has issued a cautionary notice to residents to be vigilant of scammers pretending to be municipal officials and demanding money under false pretenses.

According to the City, these individuals contact residents claiming that their municipal services will be disconnected unless immediate payment is made. The fraudulent demands often include payment methods such as e-wallets, electronic fund transfers (EFTs), or other online transactions.

City spokesperson Lydia Amutenya clarify, saying:

“The City of Windhoek has not authorised anyone to call residents requesting payments via e-wallet or any wallet, EFT, or online payment.” She emphasized that residents also have the option of paying in cash at authorised municipal offices.

The City further outlined the official payment methods available, including debit orders, direct deposits at commercial banks, electronic or online banking to the City of Windhoek account, and ATM payments for FNB clients.

Residents are advised to verify any payment requests and to contact the City of Windhoek directly using the official contact details provided on its website. The City urged everyone to remain cautious and report any suspicious activities immediately.
