The City of Windhoek has expressed growing concern over the surge in sewer blockages caused by residents dumping inappropriate items into the drainage system.
Municipal officials say people continue to treat sewer lines as rubbish bins, leading to frequent overflows that pose serious health risks and damage public infrastructure.
Recent clean-up operations by city teams uncovered shocking items clogging the system, including tyres, car parts, bricks, clothing, and even animal remains. These materials obstruct water flow, causing sewage to spill into streets and residential areas.
According to the municipality, millions of dollars are spent each year repairing the damage funds that could otherwise support community development projects.
The City has urged residents to stop disposing of waste in toilets, drains, and manholes, and to report vandalism or illegal dumping.
“Preventing sewer blockages is a shared responsibility,” the municipality stated, calling on the public to help safeguard Windhoek’s sanitation system and protect community health.
