The Namibian Police have confirmed an incident captured in a viral video showing a group of community members assaulting a taxi driver accused of attempting to sexually assault a 14-year-old girl in Windhoek.
Police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, said the incident took place on Monday, 20 October 2025, after the girl was picked up by a green Mazda Demio taxi from her school in Khomasdal. The suspect allegedly touched the minor inappropriately during the trip.
According to Shikwambi, the victim later informed her mother about the incident. The mother then called the driver to their home to confront him. Upon arrival, the confrontation turned violent, and the driver was beaten by community members an attack that was recorded and circulated widely on social media.
Shikwambi confirmed that a case of indecent assault has been opened against the driver, who was arrested and later taken to hospital for medical treatment due to injuries sustained during the assault.
While acknowledging public outrage, Shikwambi strongly urged the community to refrain from engaging in acts of mob justice.
“We understand the emotions involved, but we urge the public not to take the law into their own hands. The matter is being handled through proper legal channels,” she said.
Police investigations into both the alleged sexual assault and the assault on the suspect are ongoing.
