The family of a six-year-old Grade 1 pupil in Windhoek has raised serious concerns after the child alleged that he was raped by three fellow pupils at the school’s hostel.
The boy reportedly disclosed the incident to his family over the weekend during a hostel visit, saying he had been assaulted by older boys, including a 14-year-old with whom he sometimes shared a bed. He was later taken to Katutura Intermediate Hospital, where a medical examination was conducted in the presence of a police officer from the Gender-Based Violence Protection Unit. However, the doctor could not conclusively determine whether penetration occurred.
Following the report, the three boys accused in the case were suspended from the school hostel on Saturday. The school’s principal confirmed the suspension but declined to provide further details, stating that a formal social worker’s report is still pending.
Khomas regional education director Paulus Nghikembua said his office has received a report on the incident and will handle the matter under the provisions of the Basic Education Act. He noted that cases involving minors require careful handling and are referred to the executive director’s office for further guidance and support.
The victim’s family has raised concerns about safety in school hostels, questioning why younger pupils are not adequately separated from older ones.
“We are worried about the environment in the hostel and the lack of proper reporting mechanisms for children who may feel unsafe,” a family spokesperson told Local News Outlet.
Social workers are expected to continue with the investigation, after which further action may be taken.
