A routine end-of-shift security check at Namdeb on Friday evening led to the arrest of a 46-year-old contract cleaner after an X-ray scanner revealed an unusual object hidden inside his body.
Police reports indicate that the cleaner, employed by Welwitchia Cleaning Services, was preparing to leave the premises when security personnel detected the anomaly. He was immediately escorted to the Namdeb hospital for further examination.
Medical staff later removed what is believed to be an unpolished diamond allegedly concealed internally by the suspect.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the value of the recovered stone, but investigations into the attempted smuggling incident are underway. The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance soon.
