The Kavango West police have launched an investigation after the remains of a newborn were discovered abandoned in Kakuro village. The disturbing case has resulted in the arrest of a 31-year-old woman and her boyfriend, also 31, who are suspected of being involved.
Chief Inspector Raimbert Muronga reported that the woman delivered the child at her home in Sheckdwella, Nkurenkuru, on Thursday, 4 September 2025, around 16h00, with her partner present. It is alleged that after the birth, the couple cut the umbilical cord, placed the infant’s remains in plastic bags, and later discarded them in the bush.
The discovery was made when the body was found concealed in two black plastic bags inside a maize meal sack. Muronga said traces of fresh blood were visible on the umbilical cord, while tissue paper had been forced into the baby’s mouth for reasons that remain unclear.
Following her delivery, the woman was admitted to Nankudu State Hospital under police guard, while her boyfriend is being held in custody. The remains were taken to the Nkurenkuru Police Mortuary, where a postmortem will determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities have urged the public to remain patient as investigations continue and more information is gathered.
