The Windhoek Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to Cedric Willemse, facing multiple charges, including fraud.
State advocate Basson Lilungwe, appearing for the prosecution, strongly opposed Willemse’s release, emphasizing the gravity of the charges, the strength of the State’s case, and the risk that he might abscond or interfere with investigations.
Lilungwe described the alleged offences as “economic sabotage at its highest peak,” noting that Willemse, who served as a member of NAMCOR’s credit committee, allegedly permitted certain companies to exceed approved credit limits a move that reportedly led to the misuse of substantial public funds.
The prosecution also referred to an alleged incident on July 11, when Willemse reportedly attempted to flee while being escorted to the hospital.
Lilungwe argued that Willemse failed to demonstrate that his release would be in the interest of justice.
Magistrate Olga Muharukua is expected to deliver a detailed judgment on October 28 regarding the bail ruling. Meanwhile, Willemse’s co-accused, Austin Elindi and Panduleni Hamukwaya, have not submitted bail applications.
