Tensions flared in Windhoek on Monday morning when angry residents from Dolam took their frustrations directly to the City of Windhoek headquarters dumping sewage-tainted waste at the premises in protest over ongoing sanitation issues in their area.
The group, led by community activist Shaun Gariseb, said they resorted to the drastic action after weeks of complaints about overflowing sewage and unbearable odours went unanswered.
Gariseb explained that the demonstration was meant to force city officials to experience what residents have been enduring. “We wanted them to feel the same discomfort we live with every day,” he said.
In response, the City of Windhoek confirmed the incident and said its cleaning unit had been dispatched to clear the waste. The municipality added that CCTV footage from the premises would be reviewed to identify those responsible for the protest.

City officials also urged residents to use proper reporting channels for service complaints and assured that maintenance teams are actively working to resolve sewer blockages across the city.
However, Dolam residents insist the problem has persisted for too long, accusing the municipality of neglecting their community’s health and safety. Many fear that the ongoing sewage leaks could soon pose a serious public health risk if left unattended.
