Botswana’s President Duma Boko has been honored as one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People for 2025, following a historic shift in the nation’s political landscape. Boko’s recognition comes after he led the opposition to a groundbreaking victory in the 2024 general elections, ending the Botswana Democratic Party’s nearly 60-year rule since independence.

A highly respected legal mind with a Harvard education, Boko emerged as a symbol of hope for many Batswana, campaigning on a platform of transparency, economic reform, and social justice. His rise to power was driven by widespread frustration over corruption and the overwhelming influence of multinational companies, especially in the diamond industry, which has traditionally dominated Botswana’s economy.

With global diamond markets under pressure due to the rise of synthetic alternatives, President Boko has placed a strong focus on diversifying Botswana’s economy. His government is actively exploring new sectors such as medicinal cannabis and renewable energy, particularly solar power, to create sustainable growth and employment.

Among his flagship promises are initiatives to double the national minimum wage, provide enhanced support for new mothers and pensioners, and drive massive job creation through strategic reforms.

TIME acknowledged Boko’s leadership as a turning point for Botswana, praising his bold vision and commitment to reshaping the country’s future in a rapidly changing world. His inclusion on the 2025 TIME 100 list marks him as a global figure whose influence extends far beyond his nation’s borders.
