Duma Gideon Boko, 54, leader of the Umbrella for Democratic Change party, was sworn in as Botswana’s sixth President after winning the recent election. The oath-taking ceremony, held at the Gaborone High Court chambers, was led by Chief Justice Terence Rannowane. The intimate gathering, which took place three days after the election, included a few government officials, clergy, close family, and media representatives.

President Boko outlined his priorities, including strengthening investor confidence and enhancing partnerships with mining companies in Botswana. He highlighted the need to diversify the country’s diamond-reliant economy to stabilize its finances.

He praised the peaceful transfer of power as a hallmark of Botswana’s democracy, noting that former President Mokgweetsi Masisi had personally congratulated him. “Today, our democracy has reached new heights. This peaceful, orderly transition, witnessed and supported by citizens across the nation, is a testament to our democratic spirit,” Boko stated.
