Easter Weekend road accident death doubled compare to last year

Nampol report

Namibia’s police force, has reported a total of 43 road accidents resulting in 124 injuries and six fatalities during this year’s Easter weekend, according to NamPol’s Inspector General, Lieutenant-General Joseph Shikongo.

While the number of accidents was lower than last year’s Easter weekend, Shikongo noted that there were more injuries and double the number of fatalities compared to the previous year.

In comparison, NamPol recorded 54 road accidents during the 2022 Easter weekend, resulting in 116 injuries and three fatalities, Shikongo revealed.

In addition to the accidents, NamPol also arrested 81 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol during this year’s Easter weekend, along with 13 drivers for other traffic-related offenses. NamPol issued a total of 2,102 summonses with a combined monetary value of N$1,999,026, suspended 88 un-roadworthy vehicles, and issued 188 courtesy notifications during the Easter weekend.

Shikongo emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility that should not solely rely on law enforcement. He urged motorists to adhere to road traffic rules at all times, even when traffic officers are not visible on the road.

Shikongo expressed appreciation for the cooperation displayed by the public, particularly motorists, and thanked everyone while urging continued adherence to road traffic rules and regulations.
