Tragedy struck the Erongo region this week when a police officer was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in Walvis Bay, followed by the death of the suspect in a subsequent confrontation in Swakopmund.

According to Erongo Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona, the incident began on Wednesday at approximately 21:40. Jacques Pienaar, an adult male from Usakos, allegedly committed a robbery at a gambling establishment in Walvis Bay. Responding officers located the suspect nearby, who was reportedly holding a firearm to his own head.

Sergeant Eustance Simasiku Matongo, 34, of the Walvis Bay Investigation Unit, attempted to convince Pienaar to surrender peacefully. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly turned the firearm on Sergeant Matongo, fatally shooting him at the scene.

Pienaar then fled, hijacking a taxi in Narraville and driving to Swakopmund. Early Thursday morning, the stolen vehicle was found abandoned in Mondesa at around 01:00. Police intercepted the suspect at the Swakopmund truck-port at approximately 02:40 while he was allegedly trying to board public transport.

During the attempted arrest, Pienaar drew his weapon, resulting in a struggle during which shots were fired. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to Swakopmund State Hospital, where he later succumbed. The firearm was recovered by police.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the next of kin of both the deceased officer and the suspect have been notified.
