France’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Sebastien Lecornu, has stepped down from his position just hours after unveiling his Cabinet, plunging the country’s political scene into renewed uncertainty.
Lecornu, who was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron last month, officially presented his Cabinet on Sunday following weeks of tense negotiations and political wrangling within Parliament.
However, according to international media reports, deep divisions among political factions over the composition of the new government led to Lecornu’s sudden resignation.
“I was ready to compromise, but each political party wanted the other party to adopt its entire programme,” Lecornu was quoted as saying.
President Macron has since accepted the resignation, marking yet another setback for the French government as it struggles to build consensus amid mounting political polarization.
Lecornu’s resignation adds to growing challenges for Macron’s administration, which has faced persistent difficulties forming a stable government since the last parliamentary elections left no party with an absolute majority.
It remains unclear who will be nominated to succeed Lecornu or how soon a new Cabinet will be announced.
