The mother of a 33-year-old man accused of killing his two children says she is devastated and struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
Selma Thomas, the suspect’s mother, described the deaths of her two grandchildren as “unbearable” and said she cannot comprehend why her son would take the lives of the innocent children.
“I am heartbroken. Those children did not deserve to die. I cannot understand what made him do this,” Thomas said.
According to police reports, the suspect allegedly attacked the children’s mother, his then-girlfriend, in Windhoek after rumours circulated that he might not be the biological father of the children. He then forcibly took the children from Windhoek to Onkani village, where his mother lives, before allegedly killing them.
Family member Otto Uusiku has appealed to the public for financial assistance to help lay the children to rest.
“The grandmother is unable to cover the costs for a double burial, and we are asking for help to give the children a dignified farewell,” Uusiku said.
The burial date has not yet been confirmed as the family awaits funds to proceed with arrangements.
Police investigations into the case are ongoing.
