The government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing informal settlements across the country, with plans underway to provide residents with proper housing and title deeds.
The demolition of shacks in Namibia has long been part of SWAPO’s vision, a promise first emphasized during the late President Hage Geingob’s leadership.
Minister James Sankwasa announced on Thursday in Katima Mulilo that the program will ensure that every Namibian living in a shack will be transitioned into a formal house, granting them legal ownership.
“All informal settlements will be formalized, and every resident who owns a shack should be entitled to a title deed,” Minister Sankwasa emphasized while engaging with the community.

His remarks come shortly after he dismissed all Katima Mulilo Town Council officials, a decision that was met with a warm reception from residents who believe it marks a turning point in the town’s governance and service delivery.
