Residents of Katima Mulilo have expressed satisfaction following the dismissal of the Katima Mulilo Town Council, describing the move as long overdue.
The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, James Sankwasa, officially dissolved the council through a notice published in the Government Gazette on 15 August 2025. The decision was made in line with Section 92(2) of the Local Authorities Act of 1992, effectively removing all serving councillors from office and transferring their powers and functions to the minister.
Reacting to the decision, Prince Musweu of the National Democratic Party (NDP) welcomed the move, stating that residents had long raised concerns about alleged corruption and irregularities in the allocation of plots.
“We at the NDP, together with the residents of Katima Mulilo, are pleased with what Honourable Sankwasa has done. This has nothing to do with tribalism, anyone from the Zambezi Region is aware of the corruption within the town council, especially regarding land allocation,” Musweu said.
The Ministry is yet to announce the next steps regarding the administration of the town.
