Police in Keetmanshoop have confiscated counterfeit money valued at over N$72 000 following the arrest of a 17-year-old schoolgirl and her 19-year-old boyfriend.
The discovery was made after the learner from J.A. van Niekerk Secondary School allegedly tried to pay for snacks during the school’s entrepreneurship day with fake notes worth N$400. Classmates immediately noticed irregularities on one of the N$200 notes and alerted a teacher, prompting further questioning.
According to the police, the girl admitted that she had obtained the cash from her boyfriend. She further revealed that a larger stash of counterfeit currency was hidden at their residence.
A subsequent police search at the house led to the recovery of fake banknotes amounting to N$50 800 and R21 400, raising the total to N$72 200.
Both suspects have been taken into custody and are expected to appear before the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 September 2025. Investigations into the matter are still underway.
