Leaders Gather in Omusati to Bid Farewell to SG Sophia Shaningwa’s Mother – The Updated World

Senior government officials, political leaders and community members converged in the Omusati Region this morning to pay their final respects to the late Petra Nahango, the mother of Swapo Party Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa.

Affectionately known as Kuku Petra, the late Nahango was remembered as a woman whose character and values deeply shaped those of her eldest daughter, Shaningwa. Speakers at the memorial service, including President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, described her as a pillar of unity, compassion and patriotism.

During yesterday’s service, President Nandi-Ndaitwah praised Kuku Petra’s steadfast dedication to her family, her community and to the ideals of Swapo and Namibia at large. Mourners highlighted that her life reflected the resilience, commitment and love that continue to define Shaningwa’s leadership.

It was revealed that when news of her mother’s passing reached Shaningwa while she was carrying out official duties in the Kavango West Region, the President attempted to comfort her. Instead, the Secretary General reportedly consoled the Head of State, expressing that although her mother had fallen, “Swapo and Namibia must live on.” The moment was described by attendees as a testament to her strength and loyalty to the nation.

As the funeral proceedings continue today, mourners say Kuku Petra leaves behind a powerful legacy rooted in unity, service and unwavering love for her country.
