Police officers in the Omusati region faced a tense and dangerous encounter on Sunday after responding to a call at a local cucashop in Omakange.
According to Kunene regional police commissioner James Nderura, the situation escalated when a 26-year-old suspect allegedly turned violent during an attempted arrest. Officers were dispatched after reports that the man had been threatening patrons at the cucashop.
“Upon arrival, officers tried to intervene, but the suspect pulled out an okapi knife and tried to stab one of the officers,” Nderura stated.
Quick action by one of the officers prevented a potential tragedy, as they managed to wrestle the knife away from the suspect before anyone was seriously harmed.
However, the confrontation didn’t end there. Nderura reported that during the struggle, the suspect kicked an officer in the stomach and punched another in the chest.
Following the incident, police opened a case of assault and obstruction of officers in the line of duty. The suspect was eventually subdued, arrested, and taken into custody.
He remains in police custody and is expected to make his first court appearance at the Opuwo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
