A man from Zambia is in hospital after allegedly trying to take his own life, following the murder of his girlfriend in Sangwali, Zambezi Region. The case is being treated as a possible domestic violence incident.
The victim, 28-year-old Sitali Rosah Namakaliza from Masikamu village, was found dead in a pool of blood on Saturday morning. Her body was discovered by a local resident who had gone to fetch water at around 11 a.m. She was lying on her back with stab wounds to her throat and chest.
Police say Sitali had visited her boyfriend, a cattle herder at the homestead, the day before she was killed. Bloodstains in the man’s room suggest the attack may have started inside the house. Officers also found a blood-stained axe and saw at the scene, along with a Zambian ID card believed to belong to the suspect.
Sitali’s body was taken to Katima Mulilo State Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem.
The suspect, a 26-year-old man from Siandabu village in Kazungula District, Zambia, was later found hanging from an electric pole in an apparent suicide attempt. He survived but suffered burns on his arms and back. He was first treated at Choi Clinic and later moved to Katima Mulilo State Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Police are still investigating, and both families have been informed.
