An Easter weekend road safety operation in Oshikango turned violent yesterday when a 29-year-old man was shot by a police officer at Mbonya location in the Ohangwena region. The man is accused of physically attacking the officer and attempting to stab him with a screwdriver during a confrontation.

According to police reports, the incident began when the man failed to stop at a mini roadblock. Officers pursued the vehicle, which the driver later abandoned before fleeing on foot. He returned shortly afterward to where a crowd had gathered around the officers. Tensions escalated as the group reportedly began assaulting the four officers present.

In the midst of the chaos, the suspect allegedly punched one of the officers and attempted to stab him with a screwdriver. The officer, acting in self-defense, responded by discharging his firearm, striking the suspect in the left leg.

The wounded man was transported to Oshakati Hospital where he is currently in stable condition. He is expected to face several charges, including resisting arrest and assaulting an officer while performing official duties.

In a related development, another individual was detained for attempting to conceal the screwdriver used in the attack, and will be charged with defeating the course of justice.

Both individuals are expected to appear in the Ohangwena Magistrate Court tomorrow.

Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, the regional police commander, has since condemned the attack and issued a stern warning that any form of violence against law enforcement personnel will not be tolerated.
