Prominent Namibian activist and businessman Michael Amushelelo has announced an indefinite break from social justice activism, citing emotional exhaustion and the need to focus on rebuilding his personal life.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Amushelelo expressed the emotional toll that comes with being a public figure and a voice for the voiceless. He revealed that he handles hundreds of phone calls daily, each one highlighting a new problem, without any administrative support.
“Every morning I need to wake up and be strong for myself and at the same time strong for others,” Amushelelo wrote. “I don’t have an assistant, I do everything by myself. I’m just seeking your support so we can register a Civil Society Organization that will have support staff to ensure that we continue doing social justice activism.”
Amushelelo added that he feels burdened by the weight of national expectations without receiving the same level of support from the people he aims to help.
“It’s funny how I am able to carry the entire nation on my tiny shoulders, yet an entire nation is unable to carry me.”
He announced that he will now focus on his personal life, following advice from his mother who has long urged him to prioritize his well-being.
“Mommy, I have listened to you,” he wrote in an emotional note. “Sorry for all the sleepless nights I have put you through. You can now sleep peacefully.”
In a follow-up post, Amushelelo shared his plans for the next chapter, highlighting his desire to lead a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. He revealed that he has begun cooking for himself and intends to cut back on unhealthy habits, including the consumption of fast food.
“Ever since I moved into my house, I have never cooked a home meal,” he said. “I will officially start cooking for myself delicious meals and cut off the junk food I have been consuming.”
Reflecting on the mental health struggles many Namibian men face, Amushelelo emphasized the importance of self-reinvention and resilience.
“It’s difficult being a broke man in today’s society. Very few women will take a broke man seriously because the role of a man is to protect and provide. When a man is unable to do so, you are seen as weak,” he wrote.
Amushelelo invited his followers, particularly young men facing similar challenges, to join him on what he calls a “journey of transformation.”
“Watch me transform from a frog to a lion,” he stated. “I have done it so many times, I have actually mastered the formula for success.”
Amushelelo’s message has sparked widespread conversation online, with many Namibians expressing support, gratitude, and encouragement for his decision to take time for personal healing and growth.
