Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi has confirmed that the recent purchase of 20 government vehicles, valued at around N$24 million, was carried out in compliance with the Procurement Act.
Speaking in Parliament, Nekundi made the statement in response to Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) MP McHenry Venaani, who sought clarity on the government’s vehicle procurement process.
Nekundi explained that new vehicle fleets are acquired with each incoming government, based on operational needs. “Recognising the current fiscal constraints and the impracticality of having office bearers deliberate with vehicles to use, the commission has resolved to revise the policy proposition for the vehicles issued,” he said. He added that the current policy allows one off-road vehicle per office bearer, meaning no more than two vehicles per office, and emphasized that vehicles are intended strictly for official use, selected based on durability, operational capacity, and maintenance efficiency.
On the matter of government assets, Nekundi told Parliament that Namibia owns 9,640 fixed assets valued at over N$47 billion, noting that acquisitions are ongoing and aligned with service delivery requirements.
