The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has issued a public clarification following reports circulating on social media regarding the sudden death of a two-month-old infant from Kainachas village, Berseba Constituency, ||Kharas Region.
According to the Ministry, the baby—delivered at home on 5 May 2025—had received routine childhood immunizations, including the 6-week dose. On 16 July 2025, the infant also received the 10-week immunization, with no signs of illness observed before, during, or after the procedure.
The situation escalated on 21 July 2025 when the baby was reported unresponsive by the mother via telephone. Health staff from the Berseba clinic responded to the call, finding the infant with no signs of life. The baby was transported to Keetmanshoop Hospital, where the child was declared dead on arrival. The body was then taken to Keetmanshoop mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
The Ministry emphasizes that there were no recorded complaints or indications of ill-health related to the immunizations prior to the incident. MoHSS also clarified that no evidence suggests negligence or misconduct by healthcare workers involved in the infant’s care. The Ministry extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and is offering psycho-social support during this difficult time.
The post-mortem examination is still underway, and the Ministry has committed to sharing additional information as it becomes available.
