A tragic incident has shaken the community of Mazana village in the Kavango East region, where a newborn baby was found buried in a shallow grave at her mother’s homestead.

The 35-year-old mother, who had given birth to a healthy baby girl on 15 April 2025 at Rundu State Hospital, is accused of killing the infant just two days later and secretly burying the body near a zinc shack in her yard. She did not inform anyone or report the incident. According to the police, the shocking discovery was made after concerned residents alerted authorities. The baby’s remains were exhumed on Thursday morning.

Police Crime Investigations Coordinator, Bonifatius Kanyetu, confirmed that the body has been taken to Rundu State Hospital for a postmortem. The mother was arrested the same day and is now facing charges of murder and defeating the course of justice as investigations continue.
