The unwavering bond between a mother and her children was vividly demonstrated when Inotila Pohamba, a 34-year-old homeowner in Goreangab, fearlessly rushed into her blazing shack to save her infant daughter and two young sons who were trapped inside.

The incident occurred on a Sunday morning at approximately 10:00. Pohamba, who has a one-month-old baby girl and two boys aged 2 and 4, was outside her home doing some cleaning when the fire broke out in the upstairs room.

Undeterred by the flames and smoke, Pohamba immediately sprang into action. She braved the hazardous conditions and searched for her infant daughter in the smoke-filled room before managing to rescue her two boys.

“My children were my top priority, and they mean everything to me,” Pohamba said, recounting the harrowing experience

Unfortunately, the fire consumed their home and destroyed all their possessions, including their national documents. Pohamba remains perplexed about the origin of the fire and what may have caused it.

In addition to losing their home, their bar, and tuckshop with all its stock were also destroyed in the blaze. As a result, Pohamba’s family was left without money, clothes, or any official documentation. Even a Range Rover belonging to her partner, who was away in the north at the time, was consumed by the fire.

Pohamba recalled the extensive damage caused by the fire, listing items such as six fridges, a pool table, two jackpot machines, a jukebox, a Sony sound system, cash, and a Kazang machine that were all lost in the flames.

Namibian firefighters and police personnel worked tirelessly for hours to extinguish the fire, and Pohamba and her three children were taken to Katutura Hospital for treatment.

In the aftermath of this devastating event, Pohamba humbly appeals to fellow Namibians for assistance as her family faces the daunting task of starting over with nothing. The clothes they were wearing when they escaped the burning shack are now their only possessions.

This act of selflessness and courage by a mother risking her life to save her children serves as a powerful reminder of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her offspring. Pohamba’s heroic actions are a testament to a mother’s unwavering love and devotion to her children, even in the face of adversity
