Namib Desert Diamonds (NAMDIA) has firmly dismissed allegations circulating on social media regarding its security protocols and corporate governance, stating that the claims are unsubstantiated and risk undermining ongoing investigations.
This comes after activist and politician Job Amupanda alleged serious irregularities at the diamond company, including questionable appointments of security consultants following a high-profile armed robbery at NAMDIA’s premises earlier this year. The robbery, which claimed two lives, sparked a wave of criticism and prompted questions about the company’s handling of security.
In a media statement released on Saturday, NAMDIA clarified that it had already communicated in March the implementation of critical security upgrades in response to the robbery. The company noted that specific details of the upgrades could not be disclosed for security reasons but confirmed that the measures were executed under Namibia’s Public Procurement Act, which allows emergency procurement in urgent cases.
“All decisions were made in the best interest of protecting staff, products, and premises, and align with international best practices,” NAMDIA said.
The company further explained that its Board of Directors had urgently appointed a security consultant to stabilise the situation and oversee the swift implementation of additional security measures. This decision, according to NAMDIA, was driven by the need for specialised expertise and forms part of a broader risk mitigation strategy.
Previously, security services at NAMDIA were provided by Neldan, a Namibian company operating in multiple countries, including Angola. However, NAMDIA clarified that the Neldan contract had reached its natural conclusion, leaving a gap that necessitated a more expert-led security approach.
NAMDIA also stressed that under the leadership of its Acting CEO, the company continues to prioritise operational stability, accountability, and the protection of Namibia’s diamond resources. The company reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating fully with authorities and maintaining high governance standards.
“Above all, the well-being of our employees remains a top priority,” the company said, adding that staff had been given access to professional counselling following the traumatic incident.
NAMDIA cautioned the public and media against spreading unverified claims, warning that such actions could jeopardise law enforcement investigations and mislead the public.
“It is imperative to allow the Namibian Police Force the necessary space and time to conduct a thorough investigation. Speculation and unverified accusations could undermine the pursuit of justice,” the statement said.
The company also expressed gratitude to the Namibian Police for their continued efforts and acknowledged recent progress, including additional arrests related to the case.
NAMDIA concluded by assuring the public that it would continue providing updates through its official communication platforms as developments unfol
