Namibia Census data

Windhoek, March 13, 2024
Namibia’s long-awaited census results for 2023 have finally been released. The statistician general of the Namibia Statistics Agency, Alex Shimuafeni, announced this morning that the nation’s population now stands at 3,022,401.

The release of these preliminary results marks a significant moment for the country, signifying a notable increase from the previous census figures. Over the years, Namibia has experienced steady population growth, with the latest census reflecting a substantial rise compared to previous decades.

According to the data provided by Shimuafeni, females continue to constitute a larger portion of Namibia’s population, a trend consistent with previous census findings. In the 2023 Population and Housing Census (PHC), females accounted for 51.2% of the population, while males represented 48.8%.

Put it in numbers, Namibia’s population is composed of 1,548,177 females and 1,474,224 males.

This gender distribution emphasizes the demographic landscape of the nation and holds implications for various aspects of societal planning and development.

The progression of Namibia’s population growth is evident when examining historical census data. In 1991, the population stood at 1.4 million, which climbed to 1.8 million in 2001, and further to 2.1 million in 2011. Now, in 2024, Namibia has surpassed the remarkable milestone of 3 million inhabitants, reflecting the country’s evolving demographic landscape and socio-economic dynamics.

The revelation of these census results underscores the importance of accurate demographic data in guiding policy formulation, resource allocation, and development planning initiatives. As Namibia continues to evolve, understanding its population dynamics remains crucial for ensuring sustainable growth and equitable distribution of resources across the nation.

The full analysis and implications of the 2023 census results are anticipated to be further explored in subsequent reports, providing valuable insights into Namibia’s demographic trends and future trajectories.
