Namibian Film ‘Lukas’ Selected for Prestigious FESPACO Film Festival

The Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) has once again put Namibian cinema on the global stage with its latest film, Lukas, officially selected for the esteemed Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) in Burkina Faso. The film will compete in the highly regarded Semaine de la Critique category.

The 29th edition of FESPACO, Africa’s most prestigious film festival, will take place from 22 February to 1 March 2025 in Ouagadougou. Founded in 1969, FESPACO has become a vital platform for celebrating Africa’s cinematic excellence and fostering cultural exchange across the continent.

This year’s festival promises to be highly competitive, featuring 235 films from 48 countries, selected from an impressive 1,351 submissions. OYO’s Lukas will stand among Africa’s finest productions, highlighting Namibia’s growing influence in the film industry.

OYO has consistently used film as a powerful medium to address pressing social issues in Namibia. While the plot details of Lukas remain under wraps, the organisation’s history of thought-provoking storytelling has generated excitement and anticipation for its latest project.

Festival organizers have expressed enthusiasm for the diversity and quality of this year’s selections. “The films chosen this year reflect the depth and creativity of African cinema,” said a FESPACO spokesperson. “We are proud to welcome Lukas to the festival.”

OYO’s selection marks a significant milestone for Namibian filmmakers, reinforcing the country’s presence in Africa’s vibrant film scene. The Namibian film community and audiences eagerly following Lukas as it competes on this prestigious platform.
