A 38-year-old man was taken into police custody on Wednesday evening in the Zambezi region after he allegedly stabbed a Zambian national to death during a confrontation at a shebeen.

According to Zambezi police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kisco Sitali, the incident happened at around 19h10 in Kongola. Investigations show that the suspect had earlier gone to the local police station to report that the deceased, identified as 32-year-old Mike Longwani from Siboya village in Zambia’s Kaungamashi area, had threatened to kill him.

“After making the report, the suspect returned to the shebeen, where a confrontation broke out between the two men. During the fight, the deceased was stabbed multiple times,” Sitali confirmed.

The suspect later surrendered himself to the authorities after the incident. Police said both men were under the influence of alcohol when the altercation occurred.

The deceased’s body was discovered with 28 stab wounds and was transported to Katima Mulilo State Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. His family in Zambia has been notified.

The suspect, who also sustained stab wounds to his hand and chin, is expected to appear in court soon. He claims the injuries were inflicted by the deceased during the scuffle.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
