Three men accused of orchestrating a robbery at the Maltahöhe Post Office remain behind bars after being denied bail in their first appearance before the Maltahöhe Magistrate’s Court.
The suspects identified as NamPost employee Ronald Van der Westhuizen (30) and co-accused Bonaventure Shimunene (23) and Delron Dauseb were arrested in connection with the incident that occurred on 22 October.
According to police reports, two of the suspects, believed to be related to Van der Westhuizen, allegedly stormed the post office at around 08h00, assaulted and tied up the security guard, and forced the clerk to hand over N$337 949.10.
Police investigations led to the trio being traced to a residence in Gibeon, where all three were arrested. Officers recovered N$260 424, with some of the money allegedly hidden in clothing, shoes, and under a bed in a room reportedly rented by Van der Westhuizen. Authorities confirmed that approximately N$77 000 has not yet been recovered.
Hardap Acting Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner John Mwatongwe, confirmed the arrests and said investigations are ongoing while the suspects remain in custody.
