Health and social services minister Elijah Ngurare has welcomed the allocation of land by the Shambyu traditional authority for the construction of a new intermediate hospital in Rundu.
During a tour of ongoing projects in the town yesterday, Ngurare confirmed that more than 30 hectares at Kayengona, about 10 kilometres east of Rundu, have been set aside for the facility.
The new hospital is expected to reduce the heavy burden currently faced by the Rundu Intermediate Hospital, which serves patients not only from Kavango East and Kavango West but also from the Zambezi Region and neighbouring Angola.
Regional health director Idah Mendai said planning work would commence on Monday. “We will start with the necessary paperwork and submit it to head office so that it can guide the budgeting process and eventual construction,” she explained.
Ngurare commended the cooperation between the ministry and the traditional authority, saying the project represents a significant step toward improving access to quality healthcare in the north-eastern regions.
