Sankwasa Takes Stand Against Rundu Council’s Decision to Extend CEO Term

Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa has declined to approve the Rundu Town Council’s decision to renew the contract of its chief executive officer, Olavi Nathanael, for another five years.
Sankwasa advised the council to openly advertise the position, saying a transparent hiring process would ensure fairness and allow other qualified candidates to apply.
Despite this, the council stuck to its decision and moved ahead with the extension.
The contract dispute comes at a time when Rundu residents are increasingly frustrated over poor service delivery. The town has been battling serious water shortages, deteriorating roads and failing infrastructure, leading to growing criticism from community members.
During a previous visit to the town, Sankwasa expressed disappointment with the council’s performance. He instructed them to restore reliable water supply within two days. Although the council agreed to act, residents say the situation never improved.
The clash between the minister and the town council has raised concerns about leadership, accountability and the future of essential services in Rundu.
