Government employees will have a day off on Friday, February 28, to allow them to attend the State memorial service for the late Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma. The decision follows approval granted to Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila to relieve public servants of their duties for the day.
However, the exemption does not apply to those providing emergency and critical services, who are required to remain on duty.
This announcement comes after the Executive Director of the Ministry of Education declared that schools would be closed on Friday to enable learners and teachers to attend the memorial service.
Dr. Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s Founding Father, passed away on February 8, 2025, after being hospitalized in Windhoek for three weeks. His remains arrived in the capital today following a weeklong series of regional memorial services.
A ceremonial route procession for his body is scheduled to take place in Windhoek today, ahead of the official State memorial service tomorrow. Dr. Nujoma will be laid to rest on Saturday at Heroes’ Acre.
